Description

The Doctoral School of Exact Sciences of Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań offers opportunities to study and conduct scientific research in the international, as well as in the national and regional dimension. The University constantly updates and expands its research programmes and educational content, with particular emphasis on their interdisciplinary character.

Discipline: Materials engineering

Materials engineering (and also the more fundamental Materials science) is a scientific discipline classified within the engineering-technical sciences and focused on the development of new materials with application potential, determination of their structure and properties. Studies within ME include synthesis/fabrication of solid-state materials, their chemical and/or biological functionalization, as well as characterization of their properties, among others mechanical, electronic/electrical, magnetic, optical and catalytic. Through the performed experimental studies and conducted theoretical calculations, ME studies allow determining the correlation between material's fabrication parameters, its structure and properties. Thus, the discipline combines the elements of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering. The ME studies carried out at AMU concentrate mainly on the development of materials for biomedical applications, such as  surface-functionalized nanoparticles for targeted therapy and bioimaging, cellular scaffolds and implants. Focus is also laid on 2-dimensional materials with potential applications in heterogeneous catalysis, polymer materials applicable in 3D printing and hybrid structures that could be used as sensors. The materials are fabricated through chemical synthesis, as well as physical and chemical vapor deposition. Structural analyses are carried out from the atomic scale to the macro scale using microscopic, spectroscopic and diffraction-based methods. The properties of materials are determined using specialized physical, chemical and biological techniques.
